Let’s start with a few of the most commonly asked questions:

  1. Are weddings your primary focus?
  2. How many weddings do you perform at each year?
  3. How do you customize the music experience for each couple?
  4. Have you played at our venue before? If not, can you make a site visit beforehand?
  5. Can you provide Master of Ceremony services?
  6. Do you take breaks? If so, what happens during the breaks?
  7. Why should I choose you as my wedding DJ?

Bored yet? You might be and you wouldn’t be alone. These are pretty standard questions and any wedding DJ should be able to answer them. Unfortunately, the DJ with the best canned answers might not be the right DJ for you. Let’s explore some questions you should be asking and some visual clues to look for when interviewing DJs to help you make sure you get the right fit for your dream day.

  1. Can you tell us about your DJ experience? How did you learn your trade? What’s your DJ background?
  2. Do you seamlessly mix one song into the next so that there are no breaks in between songs?
  3. Ask a question related to the music you listen to, in order to gauge musical knowledge.
  4. Do you have mixes available for us to listen to?
  5. Do you have references we can contact?
  6. How do you handle requests?

Visual Clues/First Impressions

  1. What was your first impression when meeting the DJ for the first time?
  2. Was the DJ passionate about DJing and music?
  3. Did the DJ make you feel comfortable?
  4. Did you laugh during your meeting?
  5. Fashion sense? Personal grooming and style? Is this a person who takes pride in their appearance and will dress and behave appropriately on your big day.
  6. Did you feel excited about the music and your party after the meeting?

Ultimately, you want a DJ who will work with you, for you and honestly cares about your special day. By asking out of the norm questions and paying close attention to your first impressions and visual cues, you’ll be able to find the ‘right’ DJ.
